Thread erosion of threads in hardened material

When we talk about EDM machining, we are talking about an exact and innovative manufacturing model, depending on the needs. At Grupo IAM, we work with wire EDM to efficiently respond to problems and challenges in different processes, for example, during the manufacture of threads. 

Wire EDM is a part machining process using copper or brass wire to cut any contour of a conductive part. IAM has seven wire EDM cutting machines.

Wire EDM for the construction sector

Sometimes, IAM's initial problem is focused on resolving the delivery of erroneous or faulty parts, as in the case that heads this article: presenting threads with errors, respecting costs and deadlines. Mild steel, the material used to manufacture engine threads, presented the complication of not allowing the tap to be inserted into its corresponding thread. The solution to this dilemma was found in wire EDM technology.

The process is divided into two crucial steps. First, an electrode with the corresponding thread geometry is manufactured. Although commercial EDM electrodes are available, in this specific case, IAM chose to manufacture its own on a lathe, given the non-standardisation of the case. This electrode, with a considerable diameter of M39, is an example of our customization and process precision capability.

Secondly, complexity arose when trying to match the old thread to the new one. This is where our know-how in centering became a differentiating factor, using wire EDM cutting to achieve precise thread synchronization. This advanced machining capability became an invaluable asset in solving the problem.
