Micro waterjet cutting represents a qualitative leap compared to traditional cutting, as it provides exceptional tolerances in cuts with minimum dimensions of up to +/- 0.4 mm. This cutting method stands out for its precision without damaging material properties and ability to avoid further processing. Cutting can be carried out with pure water or abrasive; cold and precise cuts are obtained.

Water jet micro-cutting in fibreglass

Micro waterjet cutting is the option chosen by IAM Group on this occasion for the manufacture of fibreglass insulating components. IAM MICRO, the division in charge of the micro waterjet cutting process at IAM Group, is in charge of this case due to the size of the pieces and also the needs of the material, as fibreglass has a high risk of delamination and therefore requires millimetric precision. 

The process starts with the material provided by the customer and selected for its insulating properties and heat resistance. As a starting point for the cutting process, it is placed in the Flow Nanojet machine to make a slot just 0.5 mm wide.

Once the cutting was completed, the ten units requested by the customer were cleaned and packaged for shipping. This process, from receipt of the material to delivery of the final product, was completed within five working days, ensuring a rapid response to the customer's needs by IAM MICRO. 

Micro waterjet cutting offers an alternative to traditional precision machining, especially when the material has certain limitations, such as fibreglass, which is prone to delamination if subjected to more aggressive cutting methods.

As shown in this example, micro waterjet cutting applies to rotary or automotive machines and is a complex process that offers solutions for various manufacturing industries. Despite its advantages, micro waterjet cutting is not the most efficient answer in all cases; for example, it is not equally optimal in large thicknesses.
