Manganese Steel Parts: Water jet cutting at Grupo IAM

Piezas de Acero Manganeso: Corte por chorro de agua en Grupo IAM

In all sectors, including the foundry, the exhaustive analysis of components is crucial to guarantee quality and durability.

Our client, a foundry, must analyze one part out of every two hundred produced to guarantee its quality.

The part in question is a part that was part of a large crawler track of a large industrial vehicle.

The part, with approximate dimensions of 1200 x 1000 x 500 mm and, manufactured in Manganese Steel. A material known for its strength and durability.

What is Manganese Steel?

Manganese steel is an alloy that is characterized by its high impact resistance and excellent wear resistance. This alloy contains a high percentage of manganese, which gives it these unique properties.

It is widely used in applications where impact and abrasion resistance are critical, such as in heavy machinery parts, mining equipment, and, of course, in excavator components such as crawler tracks.

The Grupo IAM Solution

At Grupo IAM, we have cut several specimens from these manganese steel parts to perform tensile and Charpy tests. These tests are essential to evaluate the mechanical strength and toughness of the material, respectively.

What is a tensile and Charpy test?

A tensile test applies a tensile force to a material and measures the specimen's response to stress. In this way, tensile tests determine the strength of a material and its elongation capacity.

The Charpy test is a pendulum that is used in tests to determine the toughness of a material. They are impact tests on a specimen.

Waterjet cutting technology.

We opted for waterjet cutting as a method for specimen preparation. Waterjet cutting is the ideal process for this type of work because it is a cold cut that does not alter the properties of the material.

It is a widely used technique in the preparation of specimens due to its precision and ability to maintain the integrity of the material.

Thanks to the collaboration between the foundry and Grupo IAM, an efficient and accurate evaluation process has been achieved for these important industrial vehicles parts.

This case demonstrates how technological innovation, such as waterjet cutting, can play a crucial role in quality assurance in the manufacture of high-performance components.
